Well, My internet cut out while i was writing this thread the first time, and i lost it all. Thats a FUUU moment right there in itself.
Anyways, Assembly Prototypes!
Im raging so i'll cut to the chase, I'll maybe edit this later with more details.
Three new departments, two less departments. There is no longer "R&D" or "Robotics" They are being replaced with Materials Research (MR) And Computer Technology (CT), which will work together as R&D and robotics. Oh, And Equipment Manufacturing (EM).
Assemblies, what are they?
Think of igniters, remote signallers, timers, etc. Those are assemblies. There were like five of them. You screw them apart and together and screw them again and they do neat things with bombs.
i guess you could make door alarms and well voice door bolting setups, But for the most part it was just bombs.
MR and CT will now work primarily with assemblies. But not for the use of bombs.
The way it'll work on this codebase is...
Each assembly will signify a code snippet, and will work together to make amazing, or useless, playermade objects.
An example would be a lasergun+fingerscanner+battery assembly to make a fingerprintlocked energy gun with extra capacity.
Prototypes will be ugly, and buggy. They're supposed to be. But if you send 'em to centcomm to be approved, Where at the next update they'll be added to the code, bugs removed, and new sprites.
Often, Prototypes will be the objectives of antags, Where they're supposed to steal a particular prototype before it gets sent, kidnap or kill the folks who designed it, and destroy evidence of the research.
Autolathes and Protolathes. They're jobs are going to be replaced by the EM department, Who's job is to mass produce the patented products for either sale by the corporation, or use aboard the station. These will be one of several main moneymakers, And will be needed on any station hoping to be self sufficient. Oh, And they'll have access to whatever gear they can make from the schematics R&D throws at them. Feel free to fuck around on the job, we arent THAT professional.
Autolathes are going to be able to make the base assembly components used by manufacturing and R&D. They will have a disk slot where you can upload new blueprints for new assemblies.
Protolathes are going to be able to make the advanced assembly components used by manufacturing, but mostly R&D. Same biz, but they work more with alium parts and chemicals, while the former uses metal and glass.
Robits and Mechs: They don't exist. Sorry about that, but I'm just not into them, and i'm putting my personal opinion above the opinions of anyone else. That and I'm lazy.
Special projects and research. When you want to make something that just isnt in the code, Or want something thats in the code, to have a use with the assemblies, like eyeballs or dice or something, you can IC fax a request form to centcomm like you would a prototype, and if its accepted, whoopie! You could just have what you want at the next update. If its outright denied, and not "delayed.", That means its either already possible, or its too OP/unreasonable, but for the most part i'll be happy to do it.
Now, What is MR and CT?
Materials research is the research of... well... new materials. You'll be working with the chemists, Xenobiology, Mining, etc. In order to find uses for the new materials you discover, and prototype new equipment using the assemblies. These are one of the other huge moneymaker jobs for the station.
Computer Tech. is the research of... well... computers. You'll be working with both code/software, and electronic components, to make new computers, software, etc.
Oh and what i said about mechs and robits? I lied. If CT and MR actually manage to get along, you could be making awesome mechs and robits in no time! There will no longer be a limit of three or four different (I know theres more, But honestly, They've never been made legit IC) mechs and robots. A huuuuge part of the assembly and prototype system stemmed from the Strike-The-Earth APLU heavily modified mech that you used to be able to find while exploring space, Always wanted to be able to make mechs like that one in robotics, so now you can, and more too! There is no limits.
So, in order to get this whole system going, We'll be needing feedback in the suggestions category on either or both of ideas for components and for things you want to be able to make with them.
Finished assemblies will vary from anything between a pen, and a multi-tile particle accelerator.
Oh, And one more thing. When the server starts off, Im leaving the crew on a little outpost on an asteroid, with minimally sufficient power and sustainability, a little pacman generator, a shit shuttle to explore space in (more on that later.) A teenie system for resupplying air, a few hardsuits, an autolathe, and a refinery. I hope you enjoy! Happy inventing!
