In the spriter skype chat arrised a conversation about how it would be easier to make 2.5D in HTML5 since spriting them would take too long. Now easies way would be using 3D models converted into 2D like project zomboid did (and it still does look sprited untill you find out that is is 3D). also if we do stay on byond and use normal 2D sprites not2.5D we should lose the walking animation because. 2 genders rougly 5 races, 2 of the races have different looking clothing to fit theyr body... no scratch that all of them since were using 48x48 and they will have different body styles so 8 frames for a smooth walking animation lets say roughly 35 different things to wear, ohh also 4 directions. now
2 genders 4 directions 5 races 5 styles 8 frames 35 clothes equals 56000 sprites... and that is only the characters add there the rest...

with 2.5 d we would be using 2d sprites. it wouldnt be much different than the graphics on byond, we would just be able to use more effects and stuff too.
as for animation, gods i know. scary stuff. not sure we'll do it yet. consider it a stretch goal.

point is you can make 3D to 2D look like byond just google project zomboid

But thats lazy and no pixelart like SS13 anymore. And for the animations for characters my 5 opinion is to just leave it aside first and care about the other suff. If we decide one day, heck why not.

I agree with lorathor. Its not much more effort to do the pixel art, which is more gratifying in the end anyways. Aninations are a stretch goal.

It will take longer and be harder trust me xD also it is moving in a indie monetized way that means Polish and animation is needed

Polished graphics come from hard work, and careful attention to details, not flat render baking cheap 3d models to make faster, multidirectional sprites.

bastion is painted 2d, clash of clans has at least one profressional 3d modeller, and they go through extensive after-render changes with graphics artists as well, Project zomboid id programmer art, to say the least. They have basic/simple 3d models, and they do pixel art over top of the rendered images.

And bastion uses 3D char model

Sure, Which has been repainted, and gone through extensive stuff after that.
Doing it in 3d will be no less work than in 2d.

So yeah when did I ever say just use it I said render into 2D and then we can add some extra stuff to it and why did they use the 3D model is because it helps with animating it smoother aka More polished

Sure, Which has been repainted, and gone through extensive stuff after that. the only thing they did was make hand painted texture ihttp://www.pinterest.com/pin/567031409307692339/ the is the UK map for the model the only painting of the character they did also maybe a render effect and that is all

Also this just texture not extensive over drawing

Well even better, They have a UV mapper and textures. We don't. If you feel like making a 3d model, and making those art assets that way, feel free to do that. But i personally believe, (i have some past experience with this too.) that it will take longer, and is completely unneccessary.

Project zomboid also no over pixelarting afterwards theindiestone.com/binky/category/project-zomboid/ source is here just technical fiddling and you get the pixel art effect now stop trying to make it look like doing good quality sprite style 3D is hard as fuck when it is not

They were 2d sprites before then they realised it is faster and easier not longer to make them in 3D and just convert

And textures are painted same way as pixel art. Man I hate writing on phone stupid auto correct

could you quit quoting me? It sends me notifications and its rather annoying, also, If you're going to send a post immediately after yourself, Just edit the original one.
Yes, Most if not all 3d software comes with its own uv mapper. But you have to modify the uv's yourself if you want the textures to align well and proper. I know, I did the texturing for a dev team on one of my not-so-recent projects.
If an image is just rendered, and then used in-game with no modification, someone would just be really damned lazy.
I already said: If you want to do it, go ahead, But neither i, nor anyone else here as i'm aware, wants to do 3d modelling for a 2d game, its unnecessary effort. I'm locking this thread. Don't start a new one on this subject.
