The idea is simple, instead of a space station, the main area would be the surface of a planet like mars. Not the actual mars though, to allow more interesting planets for exploration. Features of the planet: - Dusty surface.
- Thin, but survivable with your own air atmosphere.
- Variable temperature.
- Ore rich underground.
- Infinite space, like minecraft.
The idea is that this will make the early game easier, and to add a bit to look at out the window. Also, there would still be a space area, it just wouldn't contain the main station. Dumps from the chat about the topic: nullbear: It raises a lot of complications. Ideally, all the complications would be dealt with eventually. The largest issue i've seen with planet-based worlds, Is their roundness or their size. You have two approaches, one: you can force the "available area" to a square, limitting the actual feel of it being a planet. The alternative, is to have the full planet available for exploration. But you generally get some weird stuff happening up and around the "poles." An older idea i had, was that your "base" would be in a square, limited area, and you can zoom out to a planetary view, in order to see other plots for building or bases. And then there was still the gateway style portal thing too, which would generally only take you to closed-worlds or underground dungeon-like areas. Amelorate: For the size issue, we could probably get away with infinite worlds and then a late game space area.

If executed well, I think it would be a great idea. However, empty space is easy to do, and that isn't a bad thing- if you want to keep an ominous feeling on the station, then space might be a better idea.
What do you plan to do with lighting on the planet? Pitch black, sunlight, or a cycle of both?

I'll probably do plain 24 hour sunlight and blame it on tidal locking. Though at the same time I may be able to do a cycle.
