Alright, So, Lets get this to a good start. Cryo and Cloning will be changed a ton in this codebase, And they are somewhat linked.
What they have in common: They are both the methods of choosing a character.
Now, Lets start with cloning first.
When you join the server, You will have two options, To create a new character (Cloning) Or load an old/premade one (Cryo)
Cloning will give you a few options, though not as many as other servers. You'll get to choose the name, gender, race, and appearance. There'll be two boxes to the right: Info, and Flavour text.
Flavour text will remain the same, Its what people see when they examine you. Info is more like OOC notes, but more IC... For the most part, it can be used by you to keep track of your players progress. Im not sure if i'm going to make it visible to other players just yet.
When you're finished setting that all up, You can click create, And the character will be made. Their blood type, and a few other variables, will be chosen at random, Nothing that would affect you severely, though.
Your character would wake up in an automated cloning lab, naked, with no memories or skills. They will have a smaller amount of funds, but enough to get by. They will not at this point be tied to any factions.
The other option, is cryo.
In cryo you will see 5, PROBABLY empty, cryo pods. Each one of these signifies a character save slot. It will give you information on the currently selected pod. Such as name, gender, race, age, their appearance, their faction, how many funds they have in their account, their flavour text, and the info page. The only thing you will be able to edit here is the info. You can choose from here to either delete (purge) or load (wake) the character. Deleting the character frees up a slot, but the character cant be recovered easily.
Cryo characters can be premade, by writing a character bio in the forums, etc. And having it added to the database. Cryo characters will usually be tied to a faction, and will usually have more funds than a new character. A benefit to this system, aside from the immersive aspect of it, Is its a sort of "whitelist" where people who've fleshed out their characters beforehand, will have access to more, and people just joining without having set up a character, will have less. This is one of several ways this codebase plans to deal with grief.
Such cryo characters may start with a locker of stuff, extra traits, (like being mute, hate9), etc. As was described in their forum bio. Now, of course, This means that the character might not be available right away, and they may be different than you pictured them. No worries, there are ways to change appearance and such in game, And if we really screwed up, just get in touch on the forums or message an admin.
Right now, i plan to have a limited number of slots for cryo. This would prevent the database from getting flooded with characters that only show up once in a while, etc. Extra cryo slots could be applied for within reason. (If you have a free slot left, you dont need another one. If they're full and you only use one of them, delete one and use it. Applications are for people who play regularly on each character.) Or you could donate for one which would be faster, and help the server.
Now, The use of these IN game, is different, but just as important. This is all about death.
Cloning pods revive you, as expected. But for a price.
Your body is no longer needed to be found by a crewmember and hauled to medical where it will be left rotting in the lobby for an hour before someone dumps it in the morgue without cloning it.
Now, You just have to wait out the cloning process (about 2-3 minutes), during which you can observe the round as a ghost. This is a privilege that can be taken away if misused, Seriously, If you abuse it, Your account will have to sit with the screen black for three minutes.
Cloning no longer leaves clone damage or brain damage. Lets say in the 20 years that have passed, its been perfected.
When cloned, you forget EVERYTHING that happened between your revival, and the last time your character used a cryo pod or was revived. Ignoring this meta, you'll be punished, probably just with a longer respawn time for each time you do it.
Oh yeah, and when you get cloned, you lose a chunk of your credits. Life insurance and such. If you run out of cash, your character will still be cloned, but you'll be broke.
Next: Cryo pods.
Cryo pods effectively "save" the memories of your characters, and halt their metabolisms, etc. You should chill (hehe, get it?) in them every now and again just so you dont get scrutinied for knowing shit you shouldnt.
From cryo pods, you can edit your info, and log out of the character. Of course, You can still log out in the dorms or by disconnecting as SSD, but you just wont get the benefits youd recieve from cryo pods.
- One: Cryo pods inject you with a bunch of chems. So you'll feel rather healthy when you come out, even if you havent had any real sleep for days, or eaten anything.
- Two: Cryo pods keep you safe from having all your shit stolen, Oh yeah, I'll mention stealing from SSD isn't an ooc crime anymore, only an IC one. If you wanna keep your stuff safe, Cryo.
- Three: This is the big important one: You get to log out of your character. The character will be saved to cryo (If you have an empty/existing slot for them)
What that means is that you will return to the lobby menu, and have the option of creating a new character, or loading a character from cryo. There is no delay for this.
That means you can effectively run a station by yourself, playing several characters with different jobs. I think this will make the server feel more populated, strengthen the immersion, aand give people more freedom with their rp.
Of course, same rules as with dying, You cant meta shit you learned playing your other characters, unless they have a legitemate way of knowing it. This could easily be abused by griefers. But the solution? Just brig them. There shouldnt be any cryo sleepers in the brig, just a bed, so you will prevent players from making use of the cryo pods. Permabrig may have "cryo cells" though, just not the standard brig.
Additionally, anyone caught abusing the cryo system, will find themselves missing a cryo slot for each time it happened, leaving them with only one, eventually, making it impossible for the system to be abused.
I'm still on the fence about adding an "observer" capability, considering there could be lots of metagaming from it, but I think i will, and just be more strict with it.
Oh yeah, in-game, if a person enters a cryo pod, that cryopod will be locked. Making cryopod manufacture a must for higher population/character counts. Of course, theres an alternative emergency way of doing it as well, and thats "purging" the cryocell from in-game. A person can hack into a cryo pod, if they know how, and destroy the person inside, freeing it for themselves. Of course, this would ic be considered murder, so dont do it. Don't be worried though, because if someone purges your character, you wont lose them, they'll just be cloned. And the life insurance covers "accidental purging" with no additional costs. And you'll have all your memories intact as well, considering you died IN a cryopod.
Sleeper cells in the permabrig will be a bit different in that they'll have a timer before they freeze the person, so you cant totally escape your sentence, it just lets you enjoy the server a bit more with another character.

Alright, So, To use a cryopod, You have to stuff all your stuff in a locker. You can keep your uniform/clothing (Not jackets and hoodies though) your ID, And whatever is in your pockets.
It will save your DNA, Funds, Health Status, etc.
Cloning automagically resets your health status, and uses your saved dna to make your body. Like usual, cloning will grow any prosthetic limbs out, heal any non-genetic disabilities, and a few other things.
I'm actually setting a variable for hair length...
So that without the certain chemicals, your hair will slowly grow out. (So long as you arent frozen) And certain hairstyles will not be available. So now theres a use for haircuts, and hair products. LOL This is such a lame update. But cloning will reset that as well, so you'll have a randomized "short" hair when you come out of cloning. When your hair grows, It will become a randomized hairstyle of that length, which can be changed in a mirror.
There will be chems to grow your hair, as for shortening it, thats easy.
Oh, and coming out of cloning your hair will be its genetic colour. Meaning hair dyes are a thing now.
