Well, Im definitely planning on having this set in the ss13 universe, But since theres a timescale on this server, and rounds are canon, its going to be set in a different time frame. Approximately 20 years after most other servers. With the timescale, approximately 12 weeks/rounds is one year in-game. Technology will progress as it should each year.
Feel free to add what you want to this, But the idea is, Buildstation takes place several years after the "Nanotrasen Incident" Where Nanotrasen collapsed, and most if not all of their research was lost. Buildstation is owned and maintained by another organisation stepping in the shoes of Nanotrasen, but its much smaller, less experienced, and has much fewer assets to start off with. The organisation has yet to be named. Buildstation is the codebase name, Not the name of the actual station. That will be named IC just like it will be BUILT IC. There are different factions, and a lot more. Although Nanotrasen no longer exists, The syndicate is alive and well, and thriving. Although Buildstation has not discovered anything exciting enough to have nabbed their attention yet. There are other factions with similar goals to theirs. (Note, A common antag objective will be to nab a particular prototype, or to destroy research/kidnap researchers, etc.) Buildstation will be built on the edge of known space, In a small pocket where the solar density is oddly sparse, As though a black hole once existed here or something. Solars will generate almost no power because of this, space will be darker, etc. (NAME THIS PLACE OR I WILL NAME IT SOMETHING UNORIGINAL. LIKE SECTOR 13.) Several other sentient alien races have been met, and MANY non-sentient races. (This means we'll have more than just space-carp assaulting the station.)
Drop a few posts here to continue from here, Or suggest names/goals of the various organisations, Or the races/creatures, etc. etc. Theres a LOT to fluff out. You could even begin to explain how the collapse of nanotrasen begun. Seriously though, Fill this one up, A lot, if not most of it, will appear in-game.

The syndicate was successful. They managed to nuke the station, and the syndicate corporations managed to survive and thrive.
One such corporation is breaking off from the Syndicate, disliking their violent mercenaries and general unorganization, and join Centcomm. This is, of course, behind scenes. Most of the space world just know that Nanotrasen went bankrupt after SS13's destruction and that a new corporation has started up, specializing in recovering derelicts and general space exploration.
If the corporation manages to succeed, they may possibly know all of what Nanotrasen had, and more. And the syndicate don't like that.
Nanotrassen is a lot bigger than just centcomm and ss13. Destroying ss13 couldnt have caused the collapse of nanotrasen, but it could have affected it. Seeing as nt is the largest megacorporation in the universe, i dont think it would even be possible for them to go bankrupt either. As for the syndicate break-off, Thats great! A little mini syndicate organisation! More antags! Different objectives.

After the collapse of NanoTrasen due to the destruction of multiple research stations, the final being the destruction of Space Station 13-A, a plasma research facility hosting the majority of NanoTrasen's data and advances and some of the only hopes for NanoTrasen to ride with new technology, by the Syndicate, they had won.
15 years have passed since the collapse of NanoTrasen due to repeated health and safety violations, lawsuits, station destructions, and inability to produce new technology, causing a complete collapse in the economy.
The Einstein Corporation of the Syndicate, one of its many member corporations, was bought out by new managers, who renamed it to what it is today, and began a new mission; fix the void left by the loss of NanoTrasen, and save the economy.

Looking at all of the equipment on the station, it's clear that they invested a LOT of money into it.

But i was thinking that NT's collapse would have occurred more from the inside, than solely from outside influences. Its meant to be a mysterious, jumble of causes that brought down NT, And a topic of gossip as well. We know that NT is capable of replacing the stations equipment and repairing it time after time after time. Yes, it may be their crown jewel, but it isnt the last thing they have. Oh, Check out the new IRC.

Like any corporation or large business, I'm assuming Nanotransen's demise would probably be the result of multiple factors. Anyways, here's some ideas you can toy with.
While the rise of Nanotransen Systems is widely documented and often used as an example for corporations and aspiring businessmen, its decline and eventual collapse is studied far less often despite being far more insightful. The discovery of plasma is typically linked to Nanotransen's success and subsequent domination of interstellar trade. With the introduction of the gas, Nanotransen gained a massive advantage in trade and manufacturing thanks to a new form of cheap energy. Plasma allowed Nanotransen to run a massive commercial fleet in order to transport goods, and continuous research with the substance would only yield more discoveries, with applications in chemistry, metallurgy, and manufacturing. With a near monopoly on plasma, Nanotransen was able to fix prices and reap massive profits, allowing for continued expansion and development. Mining and selling plasma was soon Nanotransen's most profitable enterprise, and allowed the company to fund massive RD projects as well as hundreds of mining and research stations. Growth was continuous, and Nanotransen was quite possibly the most profitable corporation to invest in as well as the largest and most powerful. However, none of this would last.
Not long after Nanotransen began to sell products made from plasma, incursions into NT space began to occur at an unprecedented level. While the majority of such incursions were prevented, small scale mining and smuggling of plasma became a lucrative industry for those willing to face the risks. Such ventures failed to seriously hurt Nanotransen, however, they fueled the interests of hundreds of rival corporate entities. Rival corporations began funneling funds into corporate espionage and sabotage at never before seen levels in order to steal the secrets that made Nanotransen successful. And thus, the Syndicate was born.
For years Nanotransen would successfully fend off the Syndicate, protecting its monopoly and tech. However, it would not last forever. The discovery of a new form of alien life, colloquially known as "slimes" would spark a second wave of research at Nanotransen, this time in the xenobiology departments. These lifeforms promised renewable ways of producing plasma, something Nanotransen would surely need when it depleted its own resources. When word was leaked by a disgraced scientist, the syndicate leaped at the opportunity, and began planning one of the most well known cases of corporate espionage. Through the use of sleeper agents aboard several high profile NT research stations, several specimens were stolen right under the noses of NT, often with little more than modified key cards and high caliber handguns. Several years after these incursions, several corporations mysteriously became self reliant, possessing their own limited stocks of plasma and the means to produce it. Investor confidence in Nanotransen plummeted as it became clear that other sources of plasma products were available at prices far lower than the cutthroat rates Nanotransen charged and for the first time, large quanitites of plasma gas and ore entered the market. However, the final blow would be dealt with the discovery of plasma in other parts of the sector outside of NT space. Struggling to reorganize, Nanotransen saw the remains of whatever hold it had on plasma collapse while inefficient business practices and over expansion left the corporation in debt.
Nanotransen was far from finished, but was declining in influence. Research in bluepsace technologies atmospherics, and Artifical intelligence remained promising, but a lack of funding severely limited progress. Nanotransen was at its weakest point yet, and the syndicate knew it. The following decade would see the Syndicate wage a war of attrition against NT through the use of sabotage and nuclear bombing via tactical insertion. At the same time, attacks from disgruntled members of the wizards federation and alien incursions destroyed the research capabilities of the corporation, and left it heavily indebted. In the end, the paranoid and desperate leaders of the corporation turned on each other. With less influence than ever and massive debts, Nanotransen was forced to sell its assets to prevent its utter destruction. Research stations were gutted and left as derelicts while others were acquired or taken over by rival corporations. Many, deemed unprofitable by the company or competitors were simply abandoned.

Well, the way I like to to imagine NanoTrasen fell is, based on what happens in normal rounds, bankruptcy. A NanoTrasen station is (in normal ss13) blown up or abandoned very quickly, often within hours of being launched; no matter how much NT skimps on safety and other things, those stations are expensive as hell. Just how I like to imagine it for the time being.

The nearest free station is a general living station near a few settled planets. Most of the employees either go there, or get cyro'd.

Bah! You just missed it. Nearest free station is a general refuelling/warehouse station. Buy/sell goods, Only have what you need to get by, but some special cargo now and again. Its automated, and has a number of adequate facilities and bunks. And its 15 minutes away using ftl, damn.
Anywhoo, the "Acari", the shuttle used to get here, and eventually the main shuttle in general, Has a passenger section, AND a cargo section. It'll be used for both. New folk will probably spawn on the station, and can contact/sign up with one of the factions from there. You could also just be a freelancer, or a pirate, if you can afford the goods to do your business.
Visitors to this station will include the occasional cargo dropoff, Vox, Pirates, Newfolk, and eventually megacorps peeking in.
Still needs a name, though, and one for the slightly damaged ai that runs the place. I'm thinking: "Limboport" and "Tug"

Limboport sounds good, but for the AI.. it's gonna be slightly damaged, so it's not gonna be the best mentally. We should have a name that symbolizes that..

People seem to run with the acronym thing a lot for AI names (Perhaps that's more of a reason to avoid doing it here, but...) "System Administrator Mark I", or "Sami" for short ?
Has the small benefit of being a Unisex name anyway.
(Figured that it's being a Mk.I developed by a small time Corporation would be reason enough for it to be on the fritz.)

You could probably make it some kind of AI that was refitted to do the works of Limboport, and make it like an AI that previously served as the administrator of an intergalactic Social Network, so the owners of the station bought the framework second hand, and as such it has some utilities that are suited to it's task, but mostly it just wants to talk and interact with people, making it quirky and damaged like you want it.
EDIT: Call it the name of the social network maybe? Starspace? Starbook?

Or, just have it randomly generate names for itself every hour and pick one at random.

I love the thought of being a pirate, living in your self-made hideout somewhere in space near the station and keeping your stuff for days.

The way I usually see NT falling, is from the crew manning the station. Either trying to separate from NT, or going back with weapons, ect. That can build up quite frequently in some rounds. Sometimes other corporations recruit some of the crew to join them -- Syndicate, Wizards, Mysterious Corps. Although money is a part of it. I like to think of it as quite a bit more than money. Edit: I also like the idea of being a pirate. Although that may or may not come into play all too soon. Depending on the rounds Double Edit: How bout 'cluster 111'? For the space their in? Just an idea. Since I've haven't read much about anyone naming it.

The particular area is intended to be uncharted, dead, space. With too little density for it to be worthwhile to start a mining operation...
And pirates will be fun antags, As they'll have personal motives for their objectives. But they wil lbe hard to play because of the limited gear, and well, You're all alone. As opposed to being a part of a rival corp.

As for the reason why NT fell, I'm no good at writing these things so I can only really pitch ideas rather than flesh them out, though I agree with what was said earlier in that for such a large Corporation to fall it would have to be a multiplicity of problems, all arising one after the other or suddenly en masse. A lot can happen in 20 years after all.
So a list of things which come to mind, can pick and choose anything you like, scrap whatever you don't. Assuming any of it is even usable.
Economic factors.
- The costs of maintaining and running SS13 for years, coupled with the lack of tangible progress, eventually lead to investors pulling their funding for the massively expensive venture.
- A bad batch of Loyalty implants, designed and manufactured by NT, are fried by an ion storm and result in: a) People's brains being fried and a huge class action lawsuit being brought against NT. b) Convicts in several labour camps being set free from the effects of the implants, leading to lots of death, destruction and another huge lawsuit against NT.
- Syndicate successfully stealing critical data and equipment, and the successful sabotage of various NT stations and facilities leads to huge potential profit loss and further expenditures for the Corporation. (on repairs, investigations, security upgrades etc)
Decline in public opinion.
- Space Terrorists capture an NT "Virological Research Station", and use what was found inside in a biological attack on a large population centre. Public was told that the research station was simply looking into consumer pharmaceuticals, whereas the station's records show extensive weapons testing had been conducted for years.
- The loyalty implant thing mentioned above kinda fits in here too.
- Leaked reports from an Internal Affairs agent reveals poor conditions under which some NT employees are forced to work.
- A dwarf planet in a newly charted system inexplicably shatters and fragments, destroying the planet as a whole and creating a new asteroid cluster. Shortly after, NT moves in and claims the cluster for itself and establishes mining operations. Planet was home to completely before unseen flora and fauna, the loss of which angered environmentalists. Debris in the asteroid cluster also suggests that a rival corporation had already established a research outpost on the Planet's surface, before its destruction.

NT treated their employee's badly on several station, and they revolted, by commandeering the station, and trying to hold possession of it? In the end, dying by the death squad, but causing NT to loose lots of $$$ in the process. Multiply this happening on several stations, while they are deep in their financial crisis. Eventually one station would succeed in gaining control on their station, or better yet a rival faction turns up and offers them better jobs, and they subvert the AI who helps keep the station under control.
I was going somewhere with this.. but not sure where. Probably the tired of me.. A lone group of ex-nanotrasen exployee's.. could start a rival small corporation? Possibly during NT's last few years of life.
